1. Rake all the leaves, branches and twigs that have made their way to the ground. Do not forget to clear away leaves and tall grass from corners and trees to prevent rodents. You will also want to do away with any remaining weeds from garden beds. Clean out rotting plants and prune back perennials. All of this will help in preparation for next spring.
2. Now is the ideal time to plan for the next year with bulbs. What is it you want to see coming up in the spring? Start by tilling the soil before the first frost to prevent garden pests and insects from making their homes in your garden over the winter months. Add compost or manure to your gardens to prepare them for next year. Fall is the perfect time to plant trees and shrubs, because this should be done six to eight weeks before the first frost.
3. Check your houseplants because pests start to move indoors looking for a place to keep warm for the winter. Bring in clay pots if you don’t want them cracking or breaking due to cold. Leave any plants with seeds for the birds to snack on during the winter as food becomes more scarce. Drain all hoses and shut off water pipes to keep them from cracking and causing damage. Clean out all gutters that may have become clogged with fallen leaves.
